EPHRATA, Wash. -- Washington State junior Jono Lafler took the individual title in the men's race but Washington won both the men's and women's team titles at the cross country dual meet between the Cougars and the Huskies at Ephrata High School Friday evening.

Lafler (Maple Valley, Wash.) won the men's 6000m race, run on a flat and grassy course, in a time of 18 minutes, 22.64 seconds. Washington's Cameron Quackenbush took second place in a time of 18:27.73 followed by teammates Joey Bywater (18:28.00), Max O'Donoghue-McDonald (18:28.50) and Gareth Gilna (18:34.24). WSU's Justin Englund (junior, Federal Way) finished sixth (18:39.98) with fellow Cougs David Hickerson (senior, Spokane) seventh (18:48.89), Kyle Boe (freshman, Vancouver, Wash.) eighth (18:49.27), and Mack Young (freshman, Redmond) ninth (18:52.82). Husky Taylor Carlson rounded out the scoring in 11th (18:53.68).

Washington, ranked No. 2 in the USTFCCCA preseason poll, was led by senior Kailey Campbell who won the women's 4000m race in a time of 14:00.63. Washington State freshman Ruby Roberts (Kingston) finished second in her collegiate racing debut in a time of 14:11.97. Huskies grabbed third and fourth places from Lindsay Flanagan (14:15.67) and Kayla Evans (14:21.09). WSU sophomore Caroline Austin (Chehalis) finished fifth (14:36.25) and freshman Allison Clark (Vancouver) placed sixth (14:41.88). The final UW scorers were Breanne Huschka in seventh (14:42.29) and Alison Ponce in ninth (15:05.33). The Cougars final scoring came from sophomore Emily Farrar (Bainbridge) with a time of 14:53.72 and freshman Sarah Bobbe (Vancouver) who ran a time of 15:10.15.

"I was extremely pleased with the way everybody ran, especially with Jono winning the men's race, and with Ruby finishing second in the women's race. It was great to see," Cougar Head Coach Pete Julian said. "It was great to see one of our women mixing it up with one of the best teams in the country. The people here in Ephrata did a great job of putting on the meet and both programs saw what they were looking for from this meet. The best thing for me to take way from today was the way the freshmen ran, across the board. We recruited winners and competitors and this solidified what we considered an amazing freshman class. We saw athletes engage and not be intimidated. It was exciting."

The next race for the Cougar harriers will be September 25 at the Community Colleges of Spokane Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in the Spokane Valley.
