No. 7 Stanford Blanks WSU 4-0 to Win Pac-10 Title

Nov. 7, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - Ronnie Fair scored a pair of goals and No. 7 Stanford outshot Washington State 24-4 in defeating the Cougars 4-0 Sunday at New Maloney Field. The win gave the Cardinal its first Pac-10 women's soccer championship since 1996 and fourth overall.

Against Stanford, the last match of the 1999 season for the Cougs, sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) had 11 saves, bringing her season total to a WSU record 126. That mark broke Natalie McDowell's record of 123 saves in 1993.

Senior Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) also set a Cougar record with her 73rd career start. Pallan, who started every game of her WSU career, came into Sunday's match tied with Kim Lynass (1990-93) and Robyn Smith (1991-94) for career starts. Pallan also joins Smith and Tari Beck (1993-96) atop WSU's all-time career games played list at 73.

Stanford's Allyson Marquand scored the only goal of the first half, netting a header from Marcia Wallis at the 33:00 mark. After allowing the Cardinal (14-4-1 overall, 7-1-1 Pac-10) just one goal in the game's first 60 minutes, WSU's defense collapsed and allowed three Stanford goals in less than six minutes.

Becky Myers dribbled through the WSU defense and beat Jorgensen for a 2-0 Cardinal lead at the 60:49 mark. Then Fair scored the first of her two goals less than three minutes later, lining a long volley into the WSU net. Fair capped the scoring with a penalty kick at the 66:45 mark.

Junior Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) got just two shots off for WSU, while freshmen Katrina Stroh (Federal Way, Wash.) and Erin Cook (Portland, Ore,) accounted for the Cougars' other shots.

The Cardinal shutout the Cougars for the sixth consecutive meeting. WSU hasn't scored on Stanford since upsetting the Cardinal 2-1 in 1993. Prior to today, Stanford had escaped with three consecutive 1-0 wins.

The Cougars finished the season 7-12 overall and 1-8 in the Pac-10. The 1-8 conference mark was WSU's worst ever and left the Cougars tied with Oregon State for ninth in the league standings. It is also WSU's third straight losing season.

It was the last game for WSU seniors Pallan, Kristin Mak (Redmond, Wash.) and Meagin Donovan (Noblesville, Ind.). Donovan played in her 72nd career match, making her one of just eight players in WSU history with more than 70 matches played.
