SEATTLE - Washington State ran into all sorts of problems as it lost its first Pac-10 conference game at Husky Soccer Field 3-0.
During pre-game warmups, midfielder Jen Burrough (University Place, Wash.) injured her knee, and had to be replaced in the starting lineup. The severity of her injury is unknown.
Another starting midfielder Niki Ironside (Kent, Wash.) was held out of the starting lineup after she broke an unspecified team rule. Ironside did come off the bench, but played only 25 minutes.
Leading scorer Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) didn't start, but did play about 60 minutes after missing the previous two games with an injured hamstring.
Washington State held tough in the first 30 minutes, but the Huskies managed to get on the board in the 35th minute.
Washington State (6-5, 0-1) gave up a corner kick to Washington (4-6, 1-0) after playing a poor drop pass. On the ensuing corner kick, Caroline Putz found Tami Bennett, who got in front of the coverage and slipped a ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
"Washington played very well," said WSU head coach Dan Tobias. "They had most of the run of play in the first half."
Five minutes later, the Huskies got on the board again, this time Putz and Bennett switched roles. Midfielder Katey Ward stole a pass in the WSU defensive third and hit Bennett with a pass. She quickly hit the ball to Putz, who scored from 15 yards out.
"Instead of being down 1-0 at half, now we find ourselves down 2-0," Tobias said. "We haven't proven that we can be a team that can come back against a quality team. I believe we can do that and the team feels they can do that, but we need to prove that."
Washington scored out the scoring early in the second half when Bennett found the back of the net again at the 50:46 mark.
Bennett finished the game with two goals and an assist, while Putz scored one goal and had two assists. The lone bright spot for WSU was goalie Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) , who entered this week leading the Pac-10 in saves. She added nine more saves to give her 67 for the season.
"Jorgy continued to demonstrate that she is a quality goalkeeper," Tobias said. "Three shots were point blank. All three looked like they were going to be sure goals and she saved them all."
Washington State will look to pick up its first Pac-10 win on the season as it travels to play UCLA on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then Sunday at USC at 1 p.m.
