Tammy Crawford is considered to be one of the key figures in establishing Washington State’s longstanding success in rowing. A 1985 WSU graduate, Crawford rowed for WSU’s club team from 1981-84 and returned to Washington State in 1990 to serve as the first head coach of the newly-established varsity rowing program. During her 12 seasons as head coach, Crawford guided WSU’s second varsity eight boat to a national championship in 1995, only five years after the program earned varsity status, defeating Princeton by 0.2 seconds at the 1995 National Collegiate Rowing Championships in Cincinnati. In total, WSU boats claimed six Pac-10 championships under Crawford’s direction and earned the program’s first bid to the NCAA Rowing Championships in 2002 with the first varsity eight. The Cougars had a total of nine crews finish inside the top-three at the Pac-10 Championship and had three other crews finish in the top six nationally.
