Elmer "The Great" Schwartz started his gridiron career at Washington State by winning All-Coast honors as a sophomore guard, a new position for him.  The following season when Coach Hollingbery needed a strong running back, Schwartz switched back to fullback in 1929 where he earned All-Coast honors after leading the Pacific Coast with 14 touchdowns. Schwartz was a major factor in the Cougars 10 wins in 1929 (the first time a WSU team had won that many games in a single season). As a senior he repeated as an All-Coast selection while also earning All-American second team honors from North American Newspaper Alliance and third-team honors from the Associated Press. Schwartz capped his collegiate career by leading the undefeated Cougars into the 1931 Rose Bowl game as Captain of Coach Babe Hollingbery's Coast Champions of 1930.  An outstanding two-way football athlete, Schwartz played on WSU teams that posted a combined record of 26 wins against only six losses in three seasons. Following his Cougar career he played three seasons of professional football.
