Curt Ledford was a 220-yard All-American sprinter and world record relay member while at Washington State College from 1937-39. At the 1937 NCAA Championships, Ledford finished fourth in the 220-yard dash. He set the school record in 1938 for the 220-yard race when run on a straightaway. He led WSC to the 1939 Northern Division Championship when he won the 100-yard dash, the 220-yard dash and anchored the sprint relay team to a second consecutive victory, scoring 11 1/4 points for the Cougars. Ledford captured the 220-yard title at the 1939 Pacific Coast Conference Championships, and went on to be the runner-up at the NCAA meet where he also took fifth in the 100-yard dash. While the Vancouver, Wash., native found success in individual races, he found fame as a member of a 440-yard relay team. Ledford ran the third leg of the sprint relay at the PCC versus Big Ten All-Stars meet, June 26, 1937, in Los Angeles. Stanford’s Jack Weiershauser and USC’s George Boone were joined by Cougars Lee Orr and Ledford to win the short relay in a time of 40.7 seconds which tied the world record run by USC in 1936.
