Cliff Chambers recorded 11 of Washington State’s 40 wins on the mound during the WWII years of 1941-42. He posted an 11-5 career mark at WSU, completing 12 of 18 starts, including nine of 10 in 1942 along with three shutouts. Signed by the Chicago Cubs, he spent 1942 in the minors before serving three years in the Air Force. He returned to baseball in 1946 and spent two years in the minors. Chambers pitched a shutout in a one-game playoff to give Los Angeles the 1947 Pacific Coast League regular season title. The Cubs brought “Lefty” to MLB in 1948 and Chambers spent six seasons in the big leagues. As a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, he threw a no-hitter, May 9, 1951. He won 14 games that year split between the Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals. He finished his MLB career with 48 victories.
