It is nearly impossible to talk about Washington State baseball without Chuck “Bobo” Brayton being a part of the conversation. After becoming the school’s first baseball All-American in 1947, he turned to coaching. During his 33 seasons (1962-94) in the Cougar dugout, Washington State won 1,162 games and Brayton ended his career ranked fourth on the NCAA all-time victories list. He led the Cougars to 11-straight conference division titles (1970-80), including nine outright. Washington State made 10 appearances in the NCAA postseason under Brayton, including a trip to the College World Series in 1965 and another in 1976. He is a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame and the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame. His uniform number 14 was retired May, 2003. The Cougars’ home ballpark is named in his honor.
