Hall of Fame
Carl Dietz may have been the greatest athlete in the history of Washington State Athletics. He played football from 1912-15, and was captain of the team as a senior. He was a standout on the track and field team, competing in the shot put, javelin, long jump (broad jump), 440-yard dash and as a member of the school’s record setting mile relay team. Dietz was a star on WSC’s first Rose Bowl team (1915 season). In the Cougars’ 14-0 Rose Bowl win over Brown, Dietz rushed for 105 yards and scored one of the team’s two touchdowns, in addition to handling punting and kicking duties. While no MVP was selected following the game, the Tournament of Roses Committee later named him the most valuable player of the game. Dietz was selected to the 1915 All-Northwest team. Following his playing career, Dietz served as an assistant football coach for the Cougars. After a stint in the Marines, he returned to WSC in 1919, where he was a football assistant coach in the fall and a freshman basketball coach in the winter. Following his death in 1924, the Daily Evergreen stated Dietz was the greatest athlete in the history of the State College of Washington.
