WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State University sophomore catcher Collin Slaybaugh and redshirt-sophomore designated hitter Adam Nelubowich were named to the 2012 Pac-12 Baseball Academic First Team Tuesday, highlighting eight Cougar student-athletes recognized for the their efforts in the classroom.
Slaybaugh, a movement studies major with a 4.00 GPA and Nelubowich, a finance major with a 3.63 GPA, each earned the honor in their first year of eligibility.
A pair of Cougars, junior outfielder Jason Monda (3.61 GPA/undeclared major) and redshirt-junior pitcher Anthony Drobnick (3.45/finance) garnered second team accolades. It was Monda's first year of eligibility and the first award for Drobnick.
Receiving honorable mention were senior third baseman Patrick Claussen (3.34/mathematics), redshirt-junior first baseman Taylor Ard (3.13/sport management), senior outfielder Kyle Johnson (3.01/economic sciences) and senior outfielder Derek Jones (3.01/sport management). Claussen picked up his third award after being a first team selection in 2010 and a second team honoree in 2011. Ard was in his first year of eligibility and it was the first honor for both Johnson and Jones.
The eight selections were the most for the Cougars since 2008 when Washington State had nine student-athletes recognized.
