No. 7 Cougars Sweep Final Regular Season Regatta

LOWELL, Ore. – No. 7 Washington State rowing won each of its five races, and the Cougars claimed their sixth-consecutive Winchell Cup Saturday, under good conditions on Dexter Lake at Lowell, Ore.
“It was a really fun race day,” said Washington State rowing head coach Jane LaRiviere. “I’m really proud that our last regular season race for all of our seniors was a victory. We’ve got to get through finals week, and then we’ll have a good week of training and head to the Pac-12 Championships.”
Washington State’s varsity eight (coxswain- Sarah Wu, stroke- Jordan Watson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Ieva Adomaviciute, Mickey Aylard, Nicole Hare, Kim Coon, Savannah Davison, bow- Morgan Cathrea) defeated No. 17 UCLA and No. 18 Oregon State in its heat. With the victory over OSU, WSU secured the Crawford Perpetual Plate. The Cougars were most heavily contested by UCLA. The Bruins crossed in 6:42.79, about six seconds behind the Cougars at 6:36.36. Oregon State finished the race in 6:52.63.
The WSU second varsity eight (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Noel Christiansen, Kellen Srb, Kayla Wakulich, Carter Marks, Jessi Howe, Sarah Steger, Emily Morrow, bow- Isabella Watt) also had to hold off No. 17 UCLA, finishing five seconds ahead of the Bruins. WSU crossed in 6:46.38, followed by UCLA at 6:51.32, and OSU at 6:59.52.
In Washington State’s varsity four heat, the Cougars again out-raced No. 17 UCLA and No. 18 Oregon State. The Cougars (coxswain- Rebecca Burns, Tori Gerken, Katrina Tarrant, Megan McDonald, bow- Lucie Weissova) won by open water over UCLA, who crossed at 7:42.75. Washington State finished in 7:32.34, slightly over 10 seconds ahead of the Bruins. Oregon State finished in 8:07.06.
In the second varsity four heat, WSU came out on top of a head-to-head battle with No. 18 OSU. The Cougars (coxswain- Megan Sanders, JoAnne Bates, Lori VerMurlen, Krista Lizardi, bow- Chloe Payne) finished in 7:57.23, well ahead of Oregon State who crossed at 8:42.54.
The Cougar third varsity eight ‘A’ crew completed WSU’s Saturday sweep. WSU (coxswain- Julia Monroe, stroke- Codi Swenson, Isabella Nicosia, Kacie Hillery, Kotryna Lasaite, Jessica Newson, Jenna Kennedy, Katie Persley, bow- Brittany Brooks) out-stroked No. 17 UCLA in the closest race of the day, winning by three seconds. The Cougars’ ‘A’ boat crossed in 6:56.80, followed by UCLA at 6:59.89, No. 18 Oregon State at 7:09.22, Oregon at 7:16.55, and WSU’s ‘B’ crew (coxswain- Lauren Leahy, stroke- Hunter Jones, Miranda Armstrong, Mahal Johnson, Taryn Olson, Christina Larsen, Emilie Newberry, Sarah Jensen, bow- Bethany Pupava) at 7:42.82.
The Cougars will shift their focus to finals as the student-athletes wrap up classes next week. Washington State returns to the water Sunday, May 17, when the Cougars challenge the field at the Pac-12 Championships on Lake Natoma at Gold River, Calif.
