February 27, 2026 | Student-Athlete Development, Student-Athlete Development
The Professional Development Kickoff showed student-athletes multiple facets of becoming a professional by equipping them with new knowledge about building a resume, utilizing LinkedIn, and transitioning out of college athletics to a career.Â
Hilde Palacios from the WSU Academic Success and Career Center led the resume building session. She explained to students how to showcase the skills they've developed as athletes on a resume. She also gave them tips on how to tailor a resume for different applications and share their experiences in a way that fits different opportunities.  Â
Gwyn Rhodes from Student-Athlete Development encouraged students to create and utilize a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn has become a platform for professionals to connect and highlight work they have done, which athletes can do as well. She encouraged them to share their experiences on and off the field to reach people who share similar interests. Â
Dwight Tardy, a WSU football alumnus, spoke to student-athletes about the transition out of college athletics. He shared his personal experience about what resources he used to build his life after sports as he found a job and new hobbies. The session also utilized the workbook, "Hanging Up the Jersey" written by Caitlin Broadwell, APCC which focuses on a smooth and thoughtful transition out of sport. Â
