Cougar Football Fall Practice – Gesa Field Scrimmage

PULLMAN, Wash. (August 10, 2024) – Washington State Football continued fall practice with a scrimmage at Gesa Field Saturday morning.

Zevi Eckhaus threw three touchdown passes and nearly 150 yards, John Mateer threw for nearly 170 yards and two touchdowns, Jaxon Potter threw for over 200 yards and two touchdowns while Hunter Najm added a passing touchdown. Freshman running back Josh Joyner led the ground attack with early 80 yard rushing to go with one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown while redshirt-freshman Leo Pulalasi added rushing score with redshirt-junior Dylan Paine and freshman Wayshawn Parker each rushing for nearly 40 yards. The Cougar ground attack combined for two rushing scores and nearly 200 yards rushing.
Senior Kris Hutson and redshirt-freshman Branden Ganashamoorthy each caught five passes for over 100 yards while freshman Chris Barnes finished with nearly 90 receiving yards. Hutson and redshirt-freshman Brandon Hills each caught two scores while Ganashamoorthy, Joyner and Landon Wright each caught a touchdown pass.
The Cougar defense combined for a seven sacks and a recorded a pair of interceptions from cornerback Stephen Hall and defensive back Kayo Patu. Quinn Roff and Michael Hughes each tallied two sacks while Nusi Malani, David Gusta and Rashad McKenzie each recorded one sack.
The first score of the day came on a Eckhaus 58-yard touchdown pass to Branden Ganashamoorthy, capping a drive that started at their own two-yard line. Running back Leo Pulalasi followed with a 12-yard touchdown and Eckhaus later capped a red zone situation with a one-yard touchdown strike to wideout Brandon Hills. Hills added his second score of the day with a short touchdown catch from Jaxon Potter.
Mateer heated up with a pair of touchdown passes midway through the scrimmage, the first coming on a 23-yard loft over the defense to wideout Chris Barnes before Hutson caught touchdowns from Eckhaus and Mateer on back-to-back drives. Potter capped his day with a beautifully placed 39-yard touchdown pass to wideout Landon Wright, Hunter Najm later hit Joyner in the flat who juked his way to end zone for a 43-yard touchdown catch and run and Joyner capped the day with a one-yard touchdown plunge on the day's final play.
WSU will have Sunday off before resuming fall practice Monday.
