Powell Earns Second Straight Pac-12 Player of the Week
October 09, 2017 | Football
SAN FRANCISCO – Washington State kicker Erik Powell was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight week, conference commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Powell connected on all four of his field goal attempts (25, 52, 47, 29) with the 52-yarder being a career high to help the Cougars beat Oregon for the third straight season. Powell enters the week tied for second in the Pac-12 Conference with 12 field goals and tied for the conference lead with 64 points. The redshirt-senior from Vancouver, Wash. earned the same accolade last week after hitting all three of his field attempts (44, 33, 32) in the win over USC with the 32-yarder proving to be the game-winner with 1:40 remaining.
Washington State improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2001 with a 33-10 win at Oregon Saturday. Powell becomes the first Cougar to earn the award in consecutive weeks since running back Rueben Mayes earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in 1984 (Oct. 20, Oct. 27) and is the first player to earn multiple special teams honors in the same season since punter Kyle Basler in 2004.
