April 30, 2016 | Football
CHICAGO – Washington State offensive lineman Joe Dahl was selected with the 12th pick in the fifth round, No. 151 overall, by the Detroit Lions in the 2016 National Football League Draft Saturday.
Dahl, a Spokane, Wash. native, was a USA Today Second-Team All-American and an All-Pac-12 First Team this past season for the Cougars. Dahl was at three-year starter for WSU, starting at left tackle the past two seasons, protecting the blind side for the nation's top-ranked passing team for two straight years.
He started 34 career games at Washington State, was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection and earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention as a senior.
Dahl is the first Cougar offensive lineman drafted since Zack Williams was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He is the highest Cougar offensive lineman taken since Scott Sanderson was selected in the third round by Houston in 1997.
Dating back to 1960, Dahl is the seventh Cougar to be selected by Detroit in the NFL Draft, joining kicker Jason Hanson (2nd round, 1992), offensive lineman Mike Utley (3rd, 1989), defensive tackle Eric Williams (3rd, 1984), running back Ray Williams (12th, 1980), defensive back Mark Patterson (12th, 1978) and wide receiver Gail Cogdill (6th, 1960).
