SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Washington State men's cross country team won the team title at the 23rd Annual Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle Saturday morning, upsetting the No. 27 Washington men's team on its home course.
The Cougar men were led by redshirt senior Drew Jordan's runner-up finish with a time of 24 minutes, 3 seconds on the 8,000 meter course. Cougars scoring included John Whelan, fourth (24:08), Sam Levora, fifth (24:21), Richard Shroy, sixth (24:21), and Lee George, seventh (24:21). Other WSU men and their places included Forrest Shaffer (9th, 24:27), Jackson Haselnus (14th, 24:52), Conner Johnsen (15th, 24:54), Michael Williams (17th, 25:06), Peter Helman (35th, 26:12), and Alex Simpson (40th, 26:31). UW's Aaron Nelson won the men's race in 24:01.
The men's team scores were WSU 24, No. 27 Washington 33, Fresno State 91, and Seattle University 107.
WSU's Abby Regan, a senior from Coonamble, NSW, Australia, finished third in the women's 6,000 meters invitational but was the second collegian to cross the line in a time of 20:34. Other WSU women and their places included Stefie Pavey (29th, 22:52). Amanda Henderson (31st, 23:00), Alexys Garcia (34th, 23:23), Kiah Condos (38th, 23:47), Mallori Lindberg (39th, 23:50), Ramona Morshead (49th, 25:19), and Hailey Gibson (51st, 25:41). Washington's Maddie Meyers won the women's race in a time of 20:21.
The women's team scores were No. 14 Washington 25, WSU 42, Fresno State 80, and Seattle University 89.
"There was a great effort on both sides today," Wayne Phipps, WSU Director of Cross Country/Track & Field, said. "Abby and Drew ran the second-fastest times in WSU history for this course. Both teams executed our race strategy very well by being very controlled in almost tempo effort until 2,000 meters to go. The group was tired from a hard few weeks of training but ran very well and I couldn't be happier about where our teams are at this point in the season.
A select number of WSU harriers will compete September 27 at the Stanford Invitational.
