Cougar Cross Country Begins Preseason Camp
August 14, 2014 | Cross Country
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State men's and women's cross country teams, under the direction of Wayne Phipps, the Director of Cross Country/Track & Field, and assistant coach Allix Potratz-Lee, embarked Thursday on a 10-day preseason conditioning and training camp.
The Cougar harriers, 11 men and 16 women, packed up their gear and headed to McCall, Idaho, for training runs at high-altitude (5,000 feet) in preparation for the 2014 season. Phipps, in his first season at WSU, is excited to see his team members in action at the varied locations that are offered in the McCall area including local running trails, the golf course and Brundage Mountain.
Phipps is familiar with the WSU team after his long-time coaching stint at nearly Idaho. He is looking forward to coaching the veterans - seniors Drew Jordan and Lee George for the men and seniors Ruby Roberts, Abby Regan and junior CharLee Linton for the women - as well as seeing how the freshmen can contribute in the fall.
The Cougars open the cross country season Aug. 30 at the Clash of the Inland Northwest meet at Mead High School in Spokane. The women will race a 4.2k course and the men will compete on a 6.2k course. Teams from Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Idaho and Whitworth will be competing in this season-opening meet.
The Cougars cross country and track and field programs can be followed on Twitter at @WSUCougarTF. Phipps and Potratz-Lee will be posting photos and updates during the preseason camp.
