PASADENA, Calif. - Washington State's Jerome Harrison carried a school-record 42 times for 247 yards and three touchdowns, and the underdog Cougars barely held on to beat UCLA 31-29 Saturday.

The Bruins failed on a 2-point conversion try with 42 seconds remaining when Drew Olson threw incomplete.

Harrison, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound junior who transferred from junior college in Pasadena, scored on runs of 25, 45 and 10 yards.

Washington State's Steve Broussard previously held the record, with 41 carries against Oregon in 1989. Harrison's 247 yards were the most by a WSU runner since 1984, when Rueben Mayes rushed for 357 yards against Oregon. That stands as a school record.

The Cougars (4-5, 2-4 Pac-10) rolled up 506 yards to snap a four-game losing streak. UCLA's offense sputtered most of the game and finished with 308 yards as the Bruins (5-4, 3-3) lost to WSU for the fourth consecutive time.

Redshirt freshman Alex Brink, making his third start since Josh Swogger went out for the year with an injury, completed 17 of 27 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown for the Cougars. He threw no interceptions.

Olson went 18-of-39 for 201 yards and two touchdowns for the Bruins, both in the fourth quarter. He threw one interception and lost a fumble.

Craig Bragg had five catches for 28 yards to set a UCLA record for career receptions. He has 180, one more than Kevin Jordan in 1992-95.

Olson's second touchdown, a 4-yarder to Manuel White, drew UCLA within two points. After White made a sensational, one-handed grab of the ball thrown behind him at the goal line, the Bruins called a time-out to set up their conversion play.

Olson scrambled to the right on an option, was hemmed in by linebacker Scott Davis, then heaved a desperation pass into a crowd in the middle of the field. The ball was tipped and dropped to the ground.

With the Bruins trailing 31-16, Olson found Tab Perry open across the middle and hit him in stride on a 47-yard touchdown play 1:26 into the final quarter.

Harrison scored his third touchdown on a slashing 10-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter to give Washington State a 31-16 lead. A Brinks-to-Jason Hill pass covered 56 yards down to the UCLA 27.

Justin Medlock's 27-yard field goal closed the Bruins to 21-10 with 5:34 left in the second quarter.

Hill gave the Cougars a 21-7 lead with an 18-yard touchdown reception earlier in the second quarter.

The Cougars' first two TDs came after UCLA turnovers, including a fumble by Perry on the opening kickoff.

After Jeremy Bohannon picked off an Olson throw at the WSU 6 and returned it to the 30 to stop a UCLA threat, Harrison ran 45 yards to make it 14-7 late in the first quarter.

The Cougars took only 18 seconds to go up 7-0. Jesse Taylor recovered Perry's fumble on the opening kickoff at the UCLA 25. Harrison swept right for 26 yards on the next play.

UCLA countered with a defensive touchdown. With the Cougars at their own 12, Harrison fumbled and the ball rolled toward the end zone. After a mad scramble with the ball bouncing around in the end zone, C.J. Niusulu finally scooped it under him for the score.
