WSU Cross Country Men and Women Victorious At Idaho Invitational

Moscow, Idaho-- Washington State's men and women ran well in their first cross country meet of the season Friday at the University of Idaho Invitational. Â The Cougar men defeated Idaho by a score of 18-39. Â On the women's side, Idaho had only four of a necessary five runners finish, and therefore could not score against WSU.
Newcomer Everlyne Lagat (Kapsabet, Kenya) paced the Cougar women, winning the 4,000 meter race in a time of 14 minutes, 55 seconds. Â Lagat, a junior transfer from Malone College in Ohio, is the younger sister of past WSU standout Bernard Lagat, who is now a volunteer assistant coach for the team. Â At Malone College last year, Lagat won the NAIA Cross Country Championship. Â
Also running well for the Cougars, junior Anna Blue (Olympia, Wash.) placed third, and senior Ryan Gilmore (Seattle) finished ninth. Â Three WSU freshmen also looked impressive in their first collegiate meet. Â Brittney Boysen, from Maple Valley, Wash., led the freshman Cougars placing 16th, Molly Bull (Oak Harbor, Wash.) followed in 21st and Julia Corbett finished 22nd. Â Other Cougar runners include Beth Welander in 25th, Erin Bannan 30th and Francine Bostian 34th.
In the men's race, Cougar runners grabbed the top four spots in the 6,000 meter competition. Â Sophomore Ian Johnson (Spokane, Wash.) and senior Oscar Franco-Parra (Beaverton, Ore.) led the way for WSU's men, finishing first and second, respectively, both with a time of 20 minutes, 15 seconds. Â Dan Wolf, a freshman from Reno, Nev., ran well in his first collegiate meet, claiming third place with a time of 20:35. Â Another freshman, Mike Heidt from Selah, Wash., crossed the finish line fourth in a time of 20:38. Â Also for the Cougar men, sophomore Jim Neeway placed ninth, freshman Make Barbero 11th, freshman Justin Ireland 23rd, sophomore Kurt Hicks 30th, sophomore Ryan Wieseler 34th, freshman Jon Manthey 40th and senior Jacob Hazelquist 45th.
The Cougars look ahead to the WSU Invitational next Saturday at the WSU Golf Course. Â Competition begins at 1 p.m., with the women running a 4,000 meter course and the men running 6,000 meters. Â At the meet, WSU faces team from Idaho, Eastern Washington and Gonzaga.
