PULLMAN, Wash. - Randy Fasani threw two touchdown passes as defending Pacific-10 champion Stanford beat Washington State 24-10 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Fasani, a senior making his first start, led Stanford to all 24 of its points in the second quarter. He completed 5 of 7 passes for 159 yards in the quarter.

Washington State was plagued by penalties and dropped passes that repeatedly gave Stanford good field position. The Cougars have lost 16 of their past 17 Pac-10 games over three seasons.

After a scoreless first quarter, Stanford's Mike Biselli kicked a 22-yard field goal early in the second. The drive featured a 38-yard run by Fasani to WSU's 13.

On Stanford's next series, Fasani eluded the rushing Raonall Smith and completed a short pass to Kerry Carter. Carter cut through numerous defenders to complete an 84-yard touchdown play, fifth-longest in Stanford history.

On the next series, Fasani spun away from Isaac Brown to complete a 37-yard pass to Luke Powell. Two plays later, Fasani connected with Casey Moore on a 6-yard TD pass for a 17-0 lead.

Moore ran 6 yards up the middle for a touchdown to give Stanford a 24-0 halftime lead.

Washington State managed just 53 yards in the first half, offset by 68 yards in penalties, and never crossed midfield.

Washington State finally scored early in the third quarter when Curtis Nettles blocked Eric Johnson's punt, and Josh Moen fell on the ball in the end zone.

Nick Lambert's 35-yard field goal for WSU late in the fourth quarter produced the final score.

A late Washington State scoring drive ended when Aaron Focht intercepted Jason Gesser's pass in the end zone.
