SEATTLE (AP) - Freshman Paul Arnold scored on an 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as Washington completed its regular season by beating Washington State 24-14 Saturday in the Apple Cup.
The Huskies (7-4, 6-2) finished second in the Pac-10 behind Stanford (7-1), which clinched the conference title and Rose bowl bid by beating California 31-13.
A Stanford loss would have put Washington in the Rose Bowl because the Huskies beat the Cardinal three weeks ago.
Washington, upset at UCLA last week, goes to the Holiday Bowl at San Diego on Dec. 29 or the Sun Bowl at El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 31.
On a rainy and windy day, the Cougars (2-9, 1-7) lost their fifth straight. They wind up their disappointing season at Hawaii next Saturday night.
Washington State has won one conference game since 1997, when it clinched its first trip to the Rose Bowl in 67 years with a victory in the Apple Cup.
Arnold showed the fans at Husky Stadium what they had to look forward to in the future when he took a handoff from the tailback position in the I formation and ran untouched into the end zone, giving Washington a 24-6 lead with 10:16 left.
The prize catch in coach Rick Neuheisel's first recruiting class, who had a 100-yard touchdown on a kickoff return against Air Force in Week 2, gained 126 yards on 14 carries for his first 100-yard rushing game for the Huskies.
After Arnold's score, the Cougars got a touchdown on a 19-yard run by Adam Hawkins with 8:22 to go. The score was set up by backup quarterback Jason Gesser's 59-yard run.
Washington led 17-6 at halftime after getting a 55-yard TD pass on a trick play. Dane Looker took a short pass from Tuiasosopo behind the line of scrimmage and passed to a wide-open Joe Jarcynka, who caught the ball at the 20 and ran untouched into the end zone with 4:51 left in the first half.
Before that, the second quarter belonged to the Cougars. After a 48-yard pass from Steve Birnbaum to Deon Burnett, Washington State got a 22-yard field goal from Rian Lindell. The Cougars added a 28-yard field goal by Lindell after a bad snap caused Washington punter Ryan Franklin to have to hurry and get off a 20-yard punt to the Washington 27.
In the opening quarter, Huskies freshman John Anderson made a 20-yard field goal after missing a 38-yard attempt and Maurice Shaw scored on a 4-yard run. Anderson tied a school record with a 56-yard field goal against UCLA.
