Robert R. “Bob” Gary was one of the greatest sprinters to compete at Washington State. As a Cougar from 1952-55, Gary captured four Northern Division 100-yard championships and three 220-yard titles. He also claimed four Pacific Coast Conference championships, two each in the 100-yard and 220-yard. As a junior, he was runner-up in the 220-yard and third in the 100-yard at the NCAA Championships. A year later, he placed fourth in the 220. Gary was utterly dominant against Northwest opponents, completing his junior and senior years without losing a sprint race to Oregon, Washington, OSU, or Idaho. Gary was ranked as one of the top sprinters in the world for several years during and after his WSU career.
