Bernard Jackson spent two years in a Cougar uniform (1970-71) and certainly made the most of his time on the Palouse. Arriving out of Pierce Junior College in California, Jackson made an immediate impact. In the 1970 season-opener against Kansas, Jackson rushed for 155 yards and scored three touchdowns. He led WSU that season with seven rushing touchdowns. The 1971 season was even better as Jackson started fast and never slowed down. He rushed for 130 or more yards in five of his first eight games, including a then-school record 261 yards against Oregon. He finished the year with 1,189 yards and 11 touchdowns, both school records at the time. In all, Jackson set 11 school records, was named to every major West Coast All-Star team and received invitations to play in the East-West Shrine Game, Hula Bowl and Coaches’ All-America Game. A fourth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1972 NFL Draft, Jackson played five years in Cincinnati, three in Denver as part of the famed “Orange Crush” defense, before closing out his career in San Diego.
