WSU Rowing Sweeps Gonzaga at Spokane

The Cougars won their 24th Fawley Cup with the varsity eight's victory.
SPOKANE, Wash. – No. 15 Washington State rowing swept regional-rival Gonzaga in dual action and won its second-straight and 24th overall Fawley Cup, Saturday morning at Silver Lake.
"The team took care of business today with our last tune up before the Pac-12 Championships in two weeks," said WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere. "I'm looking forward to having exams be over and heading to Sacramento."
The WSU varsity eight (coxswain - Jenna Mangiagli, stroke - Kamila Ondrackova, Jess Brougham, Kristel Tohu, Lucie Weissova, Emily Thomson, Paige Danielson, Lisa Gutfleisch, bow - Ivy Elling Quaintance) won its second-consecutive Fawley Cup, crossing at 6:24.070, with Gonzaga finishing at 6:29.660. The victory marks the 24th time that the Cougars have captured the Fawley Cup in its 27 years of existence.

WSU's second varsity eight (coxswain - Ellie Burg, stroke - Emily Morrow, Taija Thompson, Colombe de Rouvroy, Kateryna Maistrenko, Jenna Kennedy, Sue Yu, Rosalina Torcivia, bow - Jasmine Brake) was also able to fend off Gonzaga. The Cougars powered through the finish line at 6:41.100, a full 10 seconds ahead of Gonzaga, crossing at 6:51.960.

WSU's varsity four (coxswain - Chloe White, stroke - Emma Gribbon, Linnea Davison, Grace Arnis, bow - Jessica Norris) continued the success of the varsity boats taking its race. The Cougars' varsity four finished the race at 7:16.730, with GU's varsity four coming in at 7:21.520.

In the first race of the morning, the Cougar second varsity four (coxswain – Juliet Perry, stroke - Ella Cowan de Wolf, Emily Weible, Sara Brevick, Renee Kemp) won the race in a close contest with the Cougar third varsity four (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, stroke – Codi Swenson, Sophia Rogers, Frances Guetlich, Miranda Armstrong). The second varsity four crossed in a time of 7:26.210, with the third varsity four finishing just over a second behind at 7:27.310. Gonzaga rounded out the race with its finish at 7:42.270.

In the final race of the day, the Cougars sent out their third varsity eight and both novice eights to compete against GU's novice eight. WSU's third varsity eight (coxswain - Hannah Welzbacker, stroke - Ella Cowan de Wolf, Sara Brevick, Renee Kemp, Codi Swenson, Madeleine Bingham, Emma Barrett, bow - Sophia Rogers) put on a strong outing finishing the course at 6:50.00, followed by the WSU's novice eight (coxswain – Rachel Wolski, stroke – McKenna Menner, Isabella Cristelli, Nora Hefte, Ellie Higgins, Katelyn Ware, Cassidy Thompson, Emily Austin, bow – Soleil Lakin) finishing at 6:56.260. The Cougars' second novice eight (coxswain – Kailee Williams, stroke – Ony Chigozie, Amelia Davison, Jordan Lawson, Miranda Dahmen, Taylor Blevins, Madison Williams, Danielle Lund, bow – Marin James) placed third by crossing at 7:12.480, with Gonzaga's novice eight finishing closely behind at 7:13.110.

The Cougars have two weeks to prepare before heading to Gold River, Calif., Sunday, May 13 for the 2018 Pac-12 Championships.
