Cougars Conclude First Day of Racing at Clemson Invitational

All four boats notched top-three finishes, including three in second.

CLEMSON, S.C.  – Three of No. 15 Washington State rowing's four boats finished second in their respective heats, as the Cougars concluded the first session of the two-day, three-session Clemson Invitational, Friday at Lake Hartwell. 

The first session was moved to Friday from Saturday due to inclement weather expected Sunday. The pre-seeded second session will kick off Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET.  The finals will take place beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. PT. Saturday morning racing will determine the seeding for the finals.

In WSU's final race of the day, the varsity eight (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Kamila Ondrackova, Jess Brougham, Kristel Tohu, Lucie Weissova, Emily Thomson, Paige Danielson, Rosalina Torcivia, bow- Ivy Elling Quaintance) finished second, just two seconds behind No. 9 Virginia, clocking a time of 6:26.47, behind the Cavaliers in at 6:24.52. Navy was third, over four seconds behind (6:30.88), followed by Minnesota (6:33.11) in fourth, just edging out UCF (6:33.62) in fifth.

The second varsity eight  (coxswain- Ellie Burg, stroke- Lisa Gutfleisch, Taija Thompson, Colombe de Rouvroy, Kateryna Maistrenko, Emily Morrow, Linnea Davison, Jenna Kennedy, bow-Jasmine Brake) took to the water facing No. 9 Virginia, No. 20 Oklahoma, Minnesota, UCF, Navy and Tennessee. Virginia won the heat with a time of 6:25.44, just over seven seconds ahead of Washington State in at 6:33.06. Oklahoma was two seconds behind WSU to finish third at 6:35.21, just in front of fourth-place Minnesota in at 6:35.68.

The third varsity eight boats started the racing. WSU (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, stroke- Ella Cowan de Wolf, Emily Weible, Sara Brevick, Jessica Norris, Emma Barrett, Madeleine Bingham, Codi Swenson, bow- Sophia Rogers) finished just over two seconds out of first with a time of 6:37.14, behind first-place and ninth-ranked Virginia in at 6:34.75. Duke came in third, seven seconds behind the Cougars with a time of 6:44.16, followed by No. 20 Oklahoma (6:49.84) in fourth and Wisconsin's novice in fifth (6:50.96).

In the second flight of the varsity four (coxswain- Chloe White, Emma Gribbon, Renee Kemp, Grace Arnis, bow- Sue Yu), WSU raced the same teams as the varsity eight and second varsity eight, placing third with a time of 7:15.57. No. 9 Virginia won with a time of 7:08.90, followed by No. 20 Oklahoma (7:12.28). Minnesota (7:16.22) was fourth and Tennessee (7:21.34) fifth.

Washington State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four will face Northeastern, UCLA, No. 4 Ohio State, Duke, UCF and Navy in the  second session Saturday morning. UCLA and Duke are receiving votes in the polls. The third varsity eight will race against Tennessee, Minnesota's novice, Indiana's novice, Virginia, Oklahoma and Clemson. The varsity eight starts racing off at 5:30 a.m. PT.
