USA Squeaks by, Australia Wins Handily at Olympics

Both teams secured spots in the quarterfinals.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State men's basketball standouts Aron Baynes (2006-09), Brock Motum (2010-13) and Klay Thompson (2009-11) each notched wins representing their respective countries, Australia and the United States, Friday at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Australia improved to 3-1 in Group A play with a decisive 93-68 victory over China, while the USA escaped a scare and improved to 4-0 in Group A with a 94-91 victory over Serbia. Both countries have secured themselves a spot in the quarterfinals. 

Motum led the trio as he tallied 15 points and three rebounds in 16 and a half minutes of action. Baynes, who started the game, finished with 12 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes. 

For the United States, Thompson played just 9 minutes and tallied three points and three assists. The game down to the wire as Serbia missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game at the final buzzer. 

Australia concludes group play against Venezuela, Sunday, Aug. 14 at 3 p.m. PT, while USA faces France that same day at 10:15 a.m. PT.
