SPOKANE, Wash.– The Washington State University women's rowing team made the short trip to Spokane to face rival Gonzaga, Saturday morning at the Head of the Spokane at the Spokane River. The Cougars sent five varsity fours, three varsity eights, and three novice eights to the water at the head race.

"I was pleased with how everyone performed today," Head Coach
Jane LaRiviere said. "We got another race under our belt, and more experience was gained. Now, we get to get back to work for a couple more weeks."

In the first flight of the day, the Cougars rowed four varsity fours, a third varsity eight, and a novice eight crew.

The WSU Varsity Four A (coxswain-

Jess Brougham) impressed in the flight, completing the 4,500-meter course at 15:49. That time, paired with the 16:02 finish for WSU's Varsity Four B (coxswain-

Lucie Weissova) was faster than Gonzaga's Third Varsity Eight, which finished a second behind the Cougars' Varsity Four 'B' crew.

Making its fall debut, the WSU novice eight (coxswain- Mikaelyn Davis, Alison Pariera, Emily Vandegrift, Linnea Davison, Jamie McIntyre, Miranda Strickland, Madeleine Bingham, Shelby DeWaard, Gabrielle Rector) finished its first race at 18:30.

In the second flight of the day, many of the Cougar rowers moved from their first-flight fours into eights, and WSU launched a varsity, second varsity, and two novice eights, along with its fifth varsity four.

The Cougar Novice Eight 'B' and 'C' crews also had success in their first races. The 'B' (coxswain- Paige Schoppe, Alexis Winnett, Anna DeTray, Kelly Hartman, Rachel Alba, Karlee Rayman, Savanna Smyer, Maddie Soran, Grace Taylor) out-raced Gonzaga's Novice Eight B by nearly a minute, crossing at 18:41. The Cougar Novice Eight C (coxswain- Mikaelyn Davis, Alison Pariera, Emily Vadegrift, Linnea Davison, Lisa Taylor, Hannah Mayes, Carmen Dittoe, Madalyn Graf, Gabrielle Rector) out-stoked the Gonzaga Novice C by almost two minutes, crossing at 18:42.
