Washington State University Athletics
Legislation
To synthesize and communicate important Pac-12 and NCAA legislation in a manner that is easy to understand and readily accessible for WSU student-athletes.
Time Demands - In-Season
A coach can NOT require you do anything on your day off.
20 Hours (CARA – Practices, competitions, weights, film, conditioning, team meetings).
Student-athletes cannot request to exceed the scheduled 20 hours of practice.
No more than 4 hours of practice per day.
Must have at least one day off every week.
Amateurism
You can’t accept money or promise of pay for your athletics ability. You cannot sign with an agent or sponsorship.
Gambling
No betting of cash or anything for anything sports related. This includes fantasy sports, super bowl pots, and march madness brackets. You can gamble at the casino or in boxing and horse-racing because they are not NCAA endorsed sports. If you bet on a march madness bracket, you will lose 1 year of eligibility. If you bet on any WSU sport, you will become PERMANENTLY ineligible.
Scholarships
A coach CAN NOT take away aid for athletic reasons. How an institution can take away your aid:
- You’re ineligible,
- you break a team rule,
- you quit,
- if you are caught breaking the law (Minor in Possession, for example).
The aid listed on your NLI or aid agreements is what you receive regardless of what the coach says. Read what you sign! If you have unpaid charges like a parking ticket or school fees, your stipend will immediately be applied to that before you receive it.
Transferring
Student-Athletes in every sport except football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, and ice hockey, can transfer without penalty. If you are in any of the above-mentioned sports, you immediately lose one year of eligibility. If you want to transfer, you must be granted permission to contact by your coach. If you want to transfer, your coach and must support the transfer and release you. If you want to transfer to a PAC-12 school, you must have support of WSU. To transfer, write a one-page statement that explains why you want to transfer. Compliance will handle the rest.
Social Media
Do not publicly post or comment anything about sports or WSU when a recruit is involved. Only communicate privately. In private, you can say anything, but don’t post. Do not post a picture with a recruit.
