KANEOHE, Hawaii - Finishing the opening two rounds of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii, Washington State Women's Golf entered the clubhouse at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in fourth place overall after posting a 601, +25. The Cougars put themselves within reach of the tournament title thanks to the stellar play of junior
Marie Lund-Hansen who completed the first two rounds of the tournament tied for third place overall at one-over par.Â
For both the Cougars and Lund-Hansen the final 18 holes of action will provide an opportunity to play their way to the top of the standings with WSU trailing No. 2 Texas by 13 strokes while Lund-Hansen sits just three strokes off the lead held by Texas A&M's Courtney Dow at two-under.
Taking advantage of better playing conditions in the morning session, Lund-Hansen put together WSU's best round of the day with a 71. The Denmark native came out strong early birding three of her fist six holes on the course. She would close the round with her fourth birdie of the early session to complete the opening 18 holes in the red. While conditions became tougher in the afternoon, Lund-Hansen was able to hold tough, posting a team-best 74 in round two.
Behind the junior ace, the Cougars' saw junior
Elodie Bridenne and freshman
Amy Chu tie for 31st in the individual standings after the pair finished 10-over with identical scores of 154. In the opening round, Chu one-upped her senior teammate by a single stroke with a 78 while Bridenne turned the tables late by a single stroke with a 75.
The Cougars suffered a tiny setback to their title hopes midway through the day when freshman
Darcy Habgood's opening round score of 73 was lost to a miss-marked scorecard. The freshman would post a 78 in the second round of play.Â
In addition to the scoring five for WSU, the Cougars brought a pair of individuals to Hawaii with redshirt-sophomoreÂ
Emily Baumgart playing her way into the tournament's top-20 after 36 holes. Baumgart tied for 19th overall after posting a 152, eight-over par, for the day.
WSU will look to push its way up the leaderboard on the final day of play, Wednesday, March 13, The field tees-off the round three in a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. (HT).
