Rowing places sixth at the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championship

LOWELL, Ore. (May 14, 2023)The Washington State women's rowing team finished the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships at Dexter Lake in sixth place as a team to put a cap on the 2022-23 season.

The Cougars collected 11 total points through four scoring races at the Pac-12 Championships to finish sixth as a team, edging UCLA by one point. WSU's varsity eight, varsity four, and third varsity eight crews picked up a team-best sixth-place finish in their respective races at Dexter Lake. The highlight of the regatta for Washington State came in Sunday's final race, where the Cougars placed sixth in the varsity eight race, finishing 1.82 seconds ahead of UCLA. The result in the 1V8+ race allowed WSU to pass the Bruins in the final team standings, finishing the Pac-12 Championships just one point in front of UCLA. By placing sixth, Washington State finished ahead of its seeding going into the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships.

"The Cougs raced their hearts out today," said WSU Women's Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "I am very proud of this team. They have come a long way this year and every result was fought for."

Washington State posted a time of 6:32.410 in the varsity eight race to finish sixth in the highest-scoring race at the Pac-12 Rowing Championships. It was a come-from-behind effort for the Cougars in the 1V8+ race, as WSU trailed UCLA by 2.17 seconds at the 1,000-meter mark. Not only did Washington State close the gap on the Bruins over the final 1,000 meters, but the Cougars overtook UCLA in the final half of the race, finishing 1.82 seconds ahead of the Bruins to finish in sixth place. Stanford won the 1V8+ at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 6:08.602.

The Cougars opened the scoring at the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships by picking up a sixth-place finish in the third varsity eight race. WSU's 3V8+ crew finished the race in 7:01.227 to earn the team's first point of the regatta. Stanford won the 3V8+ race with a time of 6:32.269. Washington State's varsity four crew was to race and also posted a sixth-place finish to add two more points to WSU's team total. It was another close battle between the Cougars and the Bruins in the V4+ race, as the Cougs clocked in at 7:31.337 to finish 0.192 seconds in front of UCLA for sixth. Stanford captured first place in the V4+ race, posting a time of 7:01.227.

WSU added two more points to its team total in the second varsity eight race by finishing seventh with a time of 6:41.017. Washington won the 2V8+ race after the Huskies clocked in at 6:18.247. Washington State opened the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships by placing fifth in the non-scoring novice 8 race. WSU posted a time of 7:24.573 in the N8+ race.

No. 4-ranked Stanford defended its Pac-12 Rowing Championship, as the Cardinal won the Pac-12 rowing title for the second-straight year. Stanford collected a first-place finish in all but one scoring race at the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships, and captured back-to-back Conference titles by finishing first in the 1V8+ race, clocking in at 6:08.602 to finish ahead of Washington and win the regatta by 3.5 points over the Huskies. The Cardinal collected a total of 43.5 points at the 2023 Pac-12 Rowing Championships.
