Three Cougars Finish in Top Five at World Rowing Cup III

Nicole Hare and Lisa Roman won Silver as members of Canada's women's eight crew.

LUCERNE, Switzerland – Former Washington State University rowers Nicole Hare (2013-15; 2017) and Lisa Roman (2010-12) finished second to capture Silver in the A Final as members of the Canadian women's eight crew and Ieva Adomaviciute (2013-15; 2017), finished fifth in the A Final as a member of Lithuania's women's double sculls crew, Sunday, at World Rowing Cup III held in Lucerne, Switzerland. 

Hare (Calgary, Alberta) and Roman (Langley, B.C.), both competed with the Canadian women's eight crew along with Karen Lefsrud, Susanne Grainger, Christine Roper, Sydney Payne, Avalon Wasteneys, Rebecca Zimmerman and Kristen Kit. The Canadians won their opening heat, July 13, clocking a time of 6:07.550, nearly three seconds ahead of the United States at 6:10.170. 

In the A final Sunday, the Canadian crew raced against New Zealand, the USA, The Netherlands, Australia and China. Hare and Roman's crew jumped out to second place early and crossed the finish in that position to capture Silver at World Rowing Cup III. The Canadians finished in a time of 6:08.110, two seconds behind champion New Zealand with a time of 6:06.170. The United States captured Bronze with a time of 6:09.170.

A native of Kaunas, Lithuania, Adomaviciute teamed up with Milda Valciukaite in the women's double scull event. The duo placed second in its heat in the opening race, July 13, moving directly to the A/B semifinal. In the second semifinal, Adomaviciute's crew finished second behind the United States with a time of 6:56.430, less than a second behind the USA with a time of 6:55.07 and a second ahead of third-place France (6:57.630). The top three advanced to Sunday's A Final.

In the A final Sunday, Lithuania faced New Zealand, Canada, the United States, The Netherlands and France. Despite jumping out to sixth, Adomaviciute and Valciukaite were able to catch France to finish fifth in a time of 6:58.450, four seconds ahead of the French in at 7:02.500. New Zealand won with a time of 6:50.120, followed by Canada in second (6:52.800) and the USA in third (6:53.040). The Netherlands finished nearly two and a half seconds ahead of Lithuania in fourth with a time of 6:56.060.

Hare was a member of the Cougar varsity rowing team for four seasons, rowing in the varsity boat all four years (2013-15; 17). She was a three-time CRCA All-Region 5 honoree, picking up first team honors in 2014 and second team in 2015 and 2017. In both 2014 and 2015, Hare was named CRCA Division I All-America Second Team. She is returning to duty for the Canadian national team, having competed in the women's pair at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also captured Silver at the 2017 World Championships as a member of Canada's women's eight crew. Hare won gold at the 2016 World Rowing Championships Under-23 Championships in the women's pair. 

A transfer from University of the Fraser Valley, Roman competed with the Cougar varsity rowing team for three seasons, competing in the varsity boat all three years (2010-12). Roman was named CRCA Division I Second Team All-America in 2012, as well as first team all-Region 5. She has competed with the Canadian women's eight since 2011, having won gold at the World Rowing Cup III in 2015. She's an Olympian having helped guide the women's eight to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also captured Silver at the 2017 World Championships as a member of Canada's women's eight crew.

Adomaviciute competed with the Cougar rowing team for four seasons, redshirting her senior season (2015-16) to train and compete with the Lithuanian national team. She is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I All-American and First Team All-Region 5 honoree (2013, 2017), as well as a 2017 Pac-12 All-Conference honoree. In 2013, Adomaviciute was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. In 2016, she captured gold in the single sculls at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships.
