PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University junior rower,
Paige Danielson, has been named to the 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 Women's At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA, the organization announced Thursday.
Last season there were separate first team and second teams, as Danielson was selected to the second team as a sophomore, while her teammate and then-senior,
Mihaela-Teodora Berindei was chosen to the first team.
A native of St. Cloud, Minn., Danielson carries a 4.00 grade point average while majoring in electrical engineering. She is both a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree and CRCA Scholar-Athlete honoree. She has rowed in the varsity eight boat throughout her junior season, as her crew finished sixth at the Clemson Invite in April and most recently, fifth at the Pac-12 Championships, May 13.
Last season as a sophomore, Danielson was award the NCAA Elite 90 Award for rowing, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at each individual NCAA Championship site. Danielson was a member of the varsity eight crew that finished 13th at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
This marks the first time since 2012 and 2013 that WSU rowing has had back-to-back years with CoSIDA All-Academic honorees, as Katie Dick was named to the first team in 2012 and 2013, after earning second team honors as a sophomore in 2011. Danielson the fifth different Cougar rower to be named to either of the two all-district teams and fourth to the first team, as a Cougar has received the honors eight and five times, respectively.
The women's at-large category includes student-athletes participating in bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. This season's all-district team is made up of 10 student-athletes from swimming, skiing, water polo, golf and gymnastics. Danielson is the only rower on the team, as nine of the honorees come from Pac-12 schools.
Danielson and all of the Academic All-District First Team honorees from all eight districts now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
No. 15 Washington State will head cross-country to participate in the 2018 NCAA Championships, May 25-27 at Nathan Benderson Park at Sarasota, Fla.
