WSU swept Oregon State in all four events, including the varsity eight, the race for the Crawford Plate.

PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 15 Washington State rowing swept Oregon State in all four events to hold onto the Winchell Cup for the ninth-straight year and the Crawford Plate for a fourth-straight year, in the annual dual between the two teams, Friday with a tailwind behind each boat at Wawawai Landing. The regatta, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved to Friday due to expected high winds.

"I was really glad to get out and get a win because we've been racing some really fast crews," WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere said. "I think it'll be a good confidence builder as we go into Clemson. I thought we handled the choppy conditions pretty well and earlier in the week I made a few lineup adjustments and I think they handled those pretty well too."

Each year the Winchell Cup is awarded to the team with the most total points (dependent on race results) on the day. It's named after 11-year novice coach, Jodi Winchell and has been awarded since 2001. The Crawford Perpetual Plate has been awarded each yea rsince 2003 and is named after the Cougars' first rowing coach, Tammy Crawford. The plate is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race. This year marks the 15th time out of 18 regattas that WSU has taken the Winchell Cup and the 13th time it's taken the Crawford Plate out of 16 times (the two teams tied in 2014).

With the wind still going pretty strong for the third race of the day, the varsity crews took to the water in the race for the Crawford Plate. In a close race, WSU's varsity eight (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Kamila Ondrackova, Jess Brougham, Kristel Tohu, Lucie Weissova, Emily Thomson, Paige Danielson, Rosalina Torcivia, bow- Ivy Elling Quaintance) took an early lead and held on to finish first and capture the Crawford Plate with a time of 6:23.4, five seconds ahead of Oregon State in at 6:28.6.

The winds started to pick up as the second varsity eights took to the course for the second race of the evening. WSU (coxswain- Ellie Burg, stroke- Lisa Gutfleisch, Taija Thompson, Colombe de Rouvroy, Kateryna Maistrenko, Emily Morrow, Linnea Davison, Jenna Kennedy, bow- Jasmine Brake) pulled away around the 1,000-meter mark for an 11-second victory. The Cougars' second varsity eight finished first with a time of 6:34.3, followed by the Beavers in second at 6:45.5.

The varsity four boats got the day started, as WSU raced two boats against OSU's one. The Cougars' A (coxswain- Chloe White, Emma Gribbon, Renee Kemp, Grace Arnis, bow- Sue Yu) jumped out to an early lead and continued on for the victory in a time of 7:21.20. The Beavers followed in second at 7:41.9, just seven seconds ahead of WSU's B (coxswain- Juliet Perry, Rachael Christman,  Frances Guetlich, Ony Chigozie, bow- Miranda Armstrong) in third with a time of 7:48.6.

After waiting for a barge to go through and in calmer winds, Washington State's third varsity eight, novice eight and second novice eight hit the course, taking on a novice boat for Oregon State. WSU's third varsity eight (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, stroke- Ella Cowan de Wolf, Emily Weible, Sara Brevick, Jordyn Brounstein, Emma Barrett, Madeleine Bingham, Codi Swenson, bow- Sophia Rogers) jumped out to a big lead early and keep it's big lead to finish in 6:48.2.
