AZUSA, Calif. -- Washington State's combined events competitors had strong first day performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational Multis Wednesday at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.

Alissa Brooks-Johnson, a redshirt senior from Doty, Wash., reached a lifetime-best first day heptathlon total of 3400 points for fifth place in Group Four. Brooks-Johnson, a two-time Pac-12 heptathlon champion and 2017 All-American, ran the 100m hurdles in a wind-aided time of 13.88 seconds (3.4 mps) and high jumped 5-feet 6 1/2 (1.69m) which is only 1/2 inch below her PR height. She threw the shot put 38-8 3/4 (11.80m) which is only 1 1/2 inches below her PR distance, and ran the 200m in a time of 24.69, equaling her PR time. Brooks-Johnson's previous first day PR total was 3,356 points, set in 2015.

Lindsey Schauble, a junior from Kennewick, Wash., scored a first day total of 2976 points, a PR total by 96 points from her 2017 performance. Schauble opened the heptathlon with a season-best 100m hurdles time of 15.07 and followed with a high jump clearance of 5-5 1/4 (1.66m) which equals her lifetime-best. She threw the shot put 34-1 1/2 (10.40m) and finished the day with a 200m dash time of 26.17. Schauble is seventh-best in Group 2.

Freshman
Martin Moldau (Rakvere, Estonia) ended the first day of his first collegiate decathlon with a total of 3,216 points, 12th place in Group 4 of the decathlon. He ran the 100m in a time of 11.13, long jumped 16-8 1/2 (5.09m), threw the shot put 40-2 1/4 (12.25m), high jumped a PR height of 6-6 (1.98m), and ran the 400m in 55.55.

- The men's decathlon Group 4 leader is Wisconsin's Trent Nytes with 4,261 points.
