RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State men's basketball standouts Aron Baynes (2006-09) and Brock Motum (2010-13) helped Australia advance to the semifinals, while Klay Thompson's (2009-11) United States team also advanced to the semis as both teams posted wins Wednesday in the quarterfinals at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Australia, the No. 2 team out of Group A defeated the No. 3 team out of Group B, Lithuania, 90-64. The Boomers were led by Patty Mills with 24 points, while Baynes went 7-for-9 from the field to finish with 16 points and 5 rebounds, along with 3 assists in 23 minutes. Motum put up 4 points of his own in just 4 minutes of action.
Australia moves on to play either Croatia or Serbia in the semifinals, Friday, Aug. 19.
The United States, the No. 1 team out of Group A also came up with a big win, defeating Argentina, the No. 4 team out of Group B, 105-78. Kevin Durant led USA with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Thompson started the game and finished with 4 points and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
USA moves on to play Spain the semifinals, Friday, Aug. 19.
The finals take place Sunday, Aug. 21.
