RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State men's basketball standouts Aron Baynes (2006-09), Brock Motum (2010-13) and Klay Thompson (2009-11) each notched wins representing their respective countries, Australia and the United States, Sunday in the final games of Group A play at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Thompson went 7-for-13 from beyond the 3-point line to go onto score a team-high 30 points as the United States improved to 5-0 in Group A with a 3-point, 100-97 victory over France. The U.S. Â clinched the No. 1 spot in Group A and will face the No. 4 team from Group B, Wednesday, Aug. 17 in the quarterfinals Thompson returned to the starting lineup after not starting the last two games. He was able to bounce back after going a combined 4-for-26 from the field for a total of 11 points in the first four games. He nearly tripled that on Sunday.Â
Australia improved to 4-1 to finish second in Group A with a decisive 81-56 victory over Venezuela. Australia moves on to the quarterfinals where it will face the third-place team from Group B, Â Wednesday, Aug. 17. In the victory Baynes had 8 points and 7 rebounds in 24 minutes. In 12 minutes of action, Motum had points and 4 rebounds. The Boomers were led by Chris Goulding with 22 points.
The quarterfinals will be played on Aug. 17, followed by the semifinals Aug. 19 and the finals Aug. 21.Â
