RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State men's basketball standout, Klay Thompson (2009-11), was victorious against his former teammates Aron Baynes (2006-09) and Brock Motum (2010-13), as the United States defeated Australia, 98-88, Wednesday in Group A play at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The United States (3-0) leads Group A, followed by Australia (2-1). Two more games remain for each team in Group A, as group play concludes Sunday, Aug. 14.Â
Baynes was the lone former Cougar to start the game, finishing with 4 points and 3 rebounds in 17 minutes. Motum had one rebound and a shot attempt in 2 minutes of action. For the USA, Thompson came off the bench for the first time this Olympics to finish with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.Â
Carmelo Anthony, who became the all-time leading scorer in U.S. men's Olympic history (293 points), led the USA with 31 points, including 9-of-15 shooting from 3-point, and eight rebounds, and it was his ninth 3 that kicked off the USA's 13-8 closing run that helped secured the victory.
Anthony's 31 points tied for the second-highest, single-game output in the U.S. men's Olympic record book, and his 15 3-point attempts set the record.
Australia, which was led by 30 points from Mills, shot 50.0 percent from the field (33-66 FGs) and 33.3 percent from 3-point for the game but was an icy 1-of-7 from 3 (.143) in the fourth quarter.
The USA, which finished the game 39.1 percent from the field (34-87 FGs) and 43.6 percent from behind the arc (17-39 3pt FGs), converted 17 Australian turnovers into 23 points, grabbed 21 offensive rebounds, which led to 23 second-chance points, and outrebounded Australia 47-40 overall.
Australia led by 5 at halftime, but USA outscored the Boomers, 21-13 in the third quarter to take the lead into the final period. Australia led for the final time with just under 8 minutes to go in the game, as the United States pulled away for the 10-point victory.
The U.S. men continue preliminary round play against Serbia at 3 p.m. PT on Aug. 12 and a final preliminary round game against France at 10:15 a.m. PT on Aug. 14. Australia faces China at 10:15 a.m. PT on Aug. 12, and Venezuela at 3 p.m. PT, Aug. 14 to end group play.
The top four finishing teams from each preliminary round group advance to the quarterfinals on Aug. 17.
The semifinals will be played on Aug. 19, and the finals are on Aug. 21.
