Aron Baynes Leads Australian Boomers over Pac-12 All-Stars

Brock Motum and Josh Hawkinson added 6 and 2 points, respectively.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Former Washington State men's basketball standout, Aron Baynes, led all scorers with 28 points as he, along with fellow-Cougar Brock Motum, paced the Aussie National team, the Australian Boomers, to a 92-83 victory over the Pac-12 All-Stars, featuring current Cougar Josh Hawkinson.

Baynes was 12-for-18 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line as he added 9 rebounds and a blocked shot in 24 minutes of action. Motum finished with 6 points and 7 rebounds, along with a steal in 16 minutes of play for the Boomers. Hawkinson had 2 points going 1-for-3 from the field along with 4 rebounds and a blocked shot for the Pac-12 All-Stars in 16 minutes. All three Cougars started the game.

The game will re-air on Pac-12 Washington, Tuesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. PT.

Baynes was helped by the quick ball movement of Patty Mills (15 points, 4 assists) and Kevin Lisch (9 points, 5 assists, 4 steals) while David Andersen (11 points, 7 rebounds) and Cameron Bairstow (9 points, 11 boards) also enjoyed their front court dominance for the Boomers.

A 10-0 run after the half-time break was the deciding factor with Mills bringing the energy in the open court while the defense of Bairstow and Andersen made it very difficult for the Pac-12 All-Stars to keep up.

From there, the Boomers controlled the tempo and while the Pac-12 All-Stars fought back with a mini 6-0 run in the dying seconds, they were unable to reduce the deficit.

Baynes set the tempo for the game in the opening minutes with eight points in the opening term including a thunderous dunk.

However, the Pac-12 All-Stars answered with speed and transition offense through Kadeem Allen of Arizona (15 points) and Stephen Thompson Jr. of Oregon State (eight points) and carried a 20-13 lead into the first break.

The second period saw Baynes again own the paint, recording 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting to half-time and when the Boomers re-focused their efforts in the third period, the result was sealed.

"In terms of the game, it's exactly what we needed," said Australian coach Andrej Lemanis. "Defensively we had issues dealing with their speed but I thought the guys came out in the third quarter and did a great job making their adjustments. This group of 12 has only played together once so all in all, it served exactly what it needed to."

Coach of the Pac-12 All-Stars, Mike Montgomery, was pleased overall with the performance of his team but admitted the play in the paint of Baynes, Bairstow and Andersen caused issues.

"I knew the physical play would be difficult for us with the Boomers being older and more mature," said Montgomery. "By and large I was pleased but I thought in the second half...we backed off a little bit rather than stepping up with them. It was a great experience for our guys and I'm hoping we come out on Thursday night and make some corrections and play a little bit better."

The Pac-12 All-Stars and Boomers will meet for a second and final time, Thursday, July 14 at Hisense Arena in Melbourne at 2:30 a.m. PT. That game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks as Roxy Bernstein and Don MacLean have the call. Tuesday's game will be replayed on Pac-12 Washington Tuesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. PT, while Thursday's will be replayed on Pac-12 Washington Thursday, July 14 at 6 p.m. PT.
